"In the year of writing (2018), I officially declare it near-impossible to meet a romantic partner in real life”. It is with such statements that Dolly Alderton covers everything she knows about love. The award-winning journalist gives an honest review of her twenties, from bad dates and parties, to essential recipes to survive a hangover or meltdown. While being a mostly laugh-out-loud book, written with much wit and humour, it also welcomes many words of wisdom learnt from the darkest moments of her life.
Dolly acts like a big sister, and manages to put words on what many women have experienced but never knew how to explain or say out loud.
Rating: 5/5
These are a few of my favourite quotes from the book:
"Perhaps it was because this was the only way I had learnt to get to know someone, with a distance in between us, with enough space for me to curate and filter the best version of myself possible"
"The bit I live in fear of – barbecues at a boyfriend’s family home, two baked potatoes on the sofa on a Saturday night in front of the telly, long car journeys on motorways together – is absolute heaven for her."
"It’s become even more apparent to me that the most important thing in a relationship is how well you work as a team."
"When you’re looking for love and it seems like you might not ever find it, remember you probably have access to an abundance of it already, just not the romantic kind."
